Sharyne Miller Named UNCW Chief Information Officer

Sharyne Miller has been named UNCW Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology Services/Chief Information Officer, the university announced today.

Her appointment comes after a national search, conducted by a 19-person committee. She will begin her position on January 4, 2016.

As UNCW’s CIO, Miller will oversee the central office of Information Technology Services (ITS), providing leadership over technology services that support academic research, classroom activities, distance education, application support and development, infrastructure and information security.

“I am honored and excited to be joining UNCW and supporting its mission, vision and strategic goals. I look forward to building information technology as a strategic asset through collaboration, communication and partnerships,” said Miller.

For more than 20 years, Miller has led complex information technology initiatives as a project manager, support specialist and director. She has held administrative posts at Hertz Corporation, American Home Products and Orange County Community College. In 2013, she was appointed Executive Director of Information Technology for Bergen Community College, the largest community college in New Jersey.

“Sharyne is an excellent addition to our leadership team in Business Affairs and the university community,” said UNCW Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs Rick Whitfield. “I have every confidence she will bring information technology visioning to our strategic discussions and work collaboratively across the university to assess our future technology needs in the classroom and beyond.”

While at Bergen, Miller was responsible for leading the design and implementation of a range of strategic technology initiatives resulting in a comprehensive technology refresh, smart/collaborative learning rooms and a state-of-the-art borderless network infrastructure across three campuses. With a staff of 50, as well as 70 student technology consultants, she was responsible for an $8 million annual budget. Under her leadership, a complete upgrade and expansion of the wired and wireless environment expanded coverage by 150% and increased bandwidth by 100%.

Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs, she will serve as an advisor on information technology issues tied to the academic mission of the university and dedication to student success. She will help UNCW plan for and respond to the technological challenges and opportunities of the future in a collaborative, team-based environment.

Miller earned a Bachelor of Science in computer information systems from Dominican College, a Master of Science in telecommunications from Iona College and is currently a Doctor of Education candidate at Northeastern University. 

A former adjunct college professor, sheis a certified Project Management Professional, Red Hat Linux Certified Technician and a Certified Technical Trainer.
