5:10 p.m., Oct. 2, 2015 – UNCW WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR HEAVY RAINS, HURRICANE JOAQUIN THROUGH THE WEEKEND
Friday, October 02, 2015
In partnership with the National Weather Service and local and state agencies, UNCW will continue to monitor Hurricane Joaquin and the concurrent rain system through the weekend. Based on the latest information available, UNCW officials have determined that the main campus and Onslow Extension Site will remain open and fully operational, with all activities proceeding on schedule.
Students enrolled in weekend classes should contact their instructors to confirm class schedules. As always, students who do not feel comfortable traveling to or from classes should use their best judgment.
Hazardous weather conditions are expected throughout the weekend. According to the current forecast, rainfall may decrease briefly on Saturday (10/3), but heavy rains are expected again on Sunday (10/4). A flood watch is in effect for the campus and surrounding community until 8 a.m. Monday (10/5). Flash flood warnings are possible throughout the weekend. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to stay informed about weather conditions by monitoring the National Weather Service or local media coverage.
Given the possibility of dangerous roads (more dangerous after dark), and potential flood conditions, students, faculty and staff are advised to avoid unnecessary travel until the storm has passed, and exercise caution while driving, with particular awareness of flooded areas, detours and debris. While on the roadways, exercise caution; do not drive through flooded areas. Surf conditions are, and will continue to be, extremely dangerous; authorities are urging people to stay out of the ocean.
As of 8 a.m. Friday (10/2), the Adverse Weather Policy is in effect for faculty and staff: https://www.uncw.edu/policies/documents/08221AdverseWeather.pdf.
Employees should contact their managers with any questions or concerns.
All campus services, including dining locations, Randall Library, and the Student Rec Center, are operating on their usual schedules. However, students should check UNCW.edu for updates before departing for campus locations, as hours of operation could change as conditions warrant.
Students and employees are encouraged to call 911 for any emergencies.
While all events are proceeding as scheduled, patrons should check individual event websites for potential changes or cancellations. For the latest UNCW Athletics schedules, please visit uncwsports.com.
As the campus continues to respond to adverse weather conditions, we request that students, parents and family members refrain from calling UNCW offices so university employees can focus time and resources on obtaining and disseminating the latest information.
Please continue to monitor the university’s homepage, UNCW Alert, Facebook and Twitter pages, or call the Emergency Information Hotline at 910.962.3991 or 888.657.5751; updates will appear via those channels if there is a change in status or conditions.
Please check uncw.edu for any updates. Thank you for your continued attention to these messages.
