Students from UNCW Honors Scholars College Contribute to the Community with Annual Beach Sweep
Wednesday, August 26, 2015
About 130 first-year students enrolled in the UNCW Honors Scholars College spent several hours at the beach on Aug. 22 as part of the program’s 15th annual beach sweep.
The students gathered trash in coastal areas at Kure Beach and Fort Fisher in southern New Hanover County. The Honors Scholars College offers academic enrichment to students at UNCW.
"We want to encourage them to learn about the Cape Fear area that is now their home,” said program director Kate Bruce. “We also want them to be aware of ways to help care for our beach environment. The Honors Beach Survey and Sweep is a great way to do this while also giving them a chance to meet and talk with local officials about environmental issues."
