CIE, City of Wilmington Host Event to Explore Coastal Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

Thursday, May 21, 2015

The UNCW Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) is hosting The Coastal Entrepreneurial Ecosystem: It's Not a Jungle Out There, a panel discussion and reception, from 4 to 7 p.m. on May 28.

Sponsored by the City of Wilmington, representatives from the CIE, Seahawk Innovation, Elite Innovations, tekMountain, Ignition and the Small Business and Technology Development Center will explore the entrepreneurial ecosystem, the network of individuals and organizations in the region that support innovators, entrepreneurs and businesses and help sustain resources for continued growth.

In addition to the panel discussion and reception, State Treasurer Janet Cowell will be in attendance to celebrate the area’s vibrant entrepreneurial community and discuss the second North Carolina Innovation Fund (NCIF), a $250 million commitment to North Carolina-centered companies.

First elected to the post in 2008 and re-elected in 2012, Cowell is the first woman to hold the office. She oversees more than $90 billion in pension investments for the state’s 900,000 teachers, firefighters and public employees. Under Cowell’s executive leadership, North Carolina is one of only 10 states in the country to earn an AAA bond rating by all three rating agencies. She was recently named one of the top 25 public pension executives in the world by Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute.

The panel discussion will be held from 4 to 5:15 p.m., with a reception to follow. Attendees must register online ahead of time.
