Harts Appointed Chairperson of NC State Safety Steering Committee

Stan Harts, UNCW Director of Environmental Health and Safety, has been appointed Chairperson of the North Carolina State Safety Steering Committee.

The Director of the Office of State Human Resources appoints 12 agency safety and health directors to serve as consultants to the State Safety Steering Committee. Harts was nominated as vice-chairperson in December 2013 and is now moving into the role of chairperson.

The committee provides guidance to the Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) in the implementation of the Workplace Requirements for Safety and Health at state agencies and universities. The committee is made up of 12 safety and health leaders from state government and the chair serves as a member of the Governors Safety and Health Leadership team. Governor Pat McCrory authorized the formation of this team under Executive Order 13 in June of 2013. Through this committee and the leadership team, OSHR has implemented dramatic measures for state agencies and universities to target the reduction of injuries and associated costs.

Harts has served as director of EH&S since 1998, is a Certified Public Manager, Licensed Geologist and Certified Safety Professional. He is responsible for leading the EH&S Department and the UNCW community in Safety, Health, Emergency Management and Sustainability issues.

He earned both an M.S. and a B.S. in geology from UNCW. His daughter is currently a junior at UNCW.
