Film Installation Expanded into Feature Length Documentary

Monday, April 21, 2014

Two years ago, UNCW filmmakers and scientists conducted an interaction between seniors and college students that resulted in Face.Age: an interactive three-screen installation that explored perceptions and attitudes toward aging. The filmmakers who created the installation media announced today they are building upon that pilot project to create a feature-length documentary film for film festivals and broadcast outlets. Face.Age is currently accepting applications for participants between the ages of 18-24 and 65 years and older, for a film shoot scheduled for May 15 and 16.

The project is collaboration between UNCW Film Studies Department Chair Dave Monahan and Penn State Professor (and former UNCW Theatre Department chair) Andrew Belser. Also participating is filmmaker Nate Daniel and UNCW Film Studies students Mary Schweers and Sarah Flores. Nate Daniel is a graduate of the Film Studies major who now works as a staff Media Specialist for the department.

This multifaceted documentary project will guide participants in two diverse age groups, 18-24 and 65 and older, to explore the physical characteristics and personal experiences of other participants, as well as delve into his or her own concepts of aging. The filmmakers will use a variety of exercises and activities to allow participants to open up and engage in conversations to discuss the way they see themselves and the way they think others see them.

The Face.Age team is currently searching for a variety of participants with diverse backgrounds. The goal is to expand the depth of the interactions between participants further from what was first captured in the project's initial installation. Face.Age is interested in recruiting members of the community with contrasting backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences that would help foster active and engaging on-camera interactions.
