UNCW's State-of-the-Art "Biotechnology Building" Opens its Doors

Monday, November 18, 2013

The University of North Carolina Wilmington celebrated the grand opening of the 'Biotechnology Building' at CREST Research Park this morning, joined by its partners, community leaders and Congressman Mike McIntyre. This is the most recent addition to the millennial CREST campus and offers multi-functional laboratories and houses specialized research equipment designed to catalyze university-industry partnerships and promote economic development through translational research.

The 69,000-square foot interdisciplinary research facility will house MARBIONC Development Group, LLC, a not-for-profit entity associated with the Center for Marine Science, as well as other companies interested in access to the most advanced biotech labs and equipment on the East Coast.

"The Biotechnology Building is an important addition not only to UNCW but to the Southeastern region," said Chancellor Gary L. Miller. "We are committed to working with our partners to provide economic opportunities for our graduates and our region. The Biotechnology Building will do that by bringing in global companies who want to capitalize on this innovative research space."

Those who gathered to celebrate the opening of the 'Biotechnology Building' include UNCW's Board of Trustees Chair Wendy Murphy, members of the North Carolina General Assembly, National Institute of Standards and Technology, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administraion, and Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, Cape Fear Community College President Ted Spring, Center for Marine Science faculty and staff, and private sector partners and potential partners.

Located directly on the Intracoastal Waterway in Wilmington, CREST Research Park's location offers access to the Cape Fear Region's health care, food, energy, healthy studies and technology centers. Also located on CREST's campus is the Center for Marine Science and Shellfish Research Hatchery. On-site services include biological screening, nutrient analysis, analytical services, synthetic chemists, nuclear magnetic resonance, and stable isotope spectroscopy.

CREST Research Park is located at 5600 Marvin K. Moss Lane. Leasing opportunities for flexible lab space are still available.
