OIDI Leadership Transition Announcement

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

Message from Denise A. Battles, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs:

Dear Campus Community,

I'm writing today to inform you of the pending departure of one of the most devoted members of the UNCW family. Dr. Jose Hernandez, who has served for nearly five years as Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, will be taking a position as Chief Diversity Officer at the University of South Florida, as of July 1. This is a significant loss not only for UNCW but also for the Wilmington community, which has come to know Dr. Hernandez as an integral connection to our campus. While we are saddened to see him go, we can also appreciate that this is actually a return to USF for Dr. Hernandez, as he served there for just over 8 years prior to coming to UNCW. Dr. Hernandez has been a powerful force in opening up the dialogue surrounding diversity - both on our campus and beyond. The invaluable relationships he has forged with business leaders, educators, scholars and students have immeasurably bolstered UNCW's community engagement. We will continue to nurture these relationships after Dr. Hernandez has left us, but we won't forget the impressive impact he has had on our diversity efforts and our culture as a whole. His commitment to bringing quality programs on diversity and inclusion to our campus, including the very successful UNCW Diversity Conference, has been matched only by his dedication to his students and colleagues.

An interim leader for the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion will be announced soon.

Please join me in wishing Dr. Hernandez well in this new phase of his career, and in thanking him for all the hard work he has done for the university and for Wilmington as a whole.
