Friday, April 19, 2013

Jeffrey L. C. Wright, the Carl B. Brown Distinguished Professor of Marine Science, is a recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. The medal was presented to him by Gary Doer, the Canadian Ambassador to the United States, at an event held at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham.

Wright was bestowed this award for his lifelong work with marine toxins - specifically identifying new toxins when they occur and devising methods for their detection in seafood or in rivers and reservoirs. More recently, his group at UNCW has discovered and characterized other toxins responsible for massive fish kills along the eastern seaboard of the United States. His work in the fields of marine science and human health continues to impact and benefit many countries throughout the world.
