World Language Requirement

Complete the University Studies Language Requirement early. We strongly advise you to complete it in your first year at UNCW. Waiting can delay your graduation. 

Review the language requirement section of your degree audit carefully. Discuss it with your advisor.

 

The language requirement generally requires you to complete a language course at the 201 level (or higher depending on placement). If you continue with a language you studied in high school, you usually need to take one or two courses to fulfill the requirement: 

  • If you place into 102 or 120, complete that course then 201. 
  • If you place into 201, complete that course. 
  • If you place above 201, complete that course. You will also earn supplemental credit. 

Or you may choose a language other than one you studied in high school. Then you only need to take courses through the 102 level in the new language. In most cases, this means taking two courses: 

  • If you start an additional language, complete 101 then 102. 

If you start over in 101 in your high school language, or if you did not study a language in high school, you might need three courses to fulfill the requirement: 

  • In these cases, complete 101 then 102 and 201. 

If you graduated high school 7 or more years before you enrolled at UNCW, an exception applies to you. Then you only need to complete a language course at the 102 level (or higher). 

If you have advanced language skills, you may fulfill the language requirement through examination. For example, AP and CLEP exams offer college credit through the 201 level.  

If you are a native speaker of a language other than English, then your proficiency in English fulfills the language requirement. Contact the department for further advising. 

If you have a disability that prevents you from learning a new language, you must contact the Disability Resource Center. They can advise you further.
