In addition to the rights and responsibilities and expected levels of student conduct listed in the UNCW Code of Student Life, the Department of Creative Writing recognizes and implements the following policies and guidelines.
You are expected to attend all classes, because your presence and participation are essential to the success of the course. There are no "excused" or "unexcused" absences, and there is no need to produce a doctor's note or other documentation-if you are not present for any reason, you will be counted absent.
If you miss class, your work is still due; you will receive a grade of zero for any missed work. Also, you are responsible for finding out what you missed in class.
Beyond one absence, your final grade will drop by a letter grade (10 points on a 100-point scale) for every missed class. If you miss four or more classes, you will automatically fail the course. Any combination of two late arrivals to class or early departures from class counts as one absence.
The instructor will consider perfect attendance in final grades, but good attendance does not make up for a lack of participation. Be present, and be active.

"While plagiarism is reprehensible in any course, it is particularly offensive in creative writing courses, most of which are centered upon the improvement of the original writing of students. Therefore, in addition to the normal penalties for plagiarism at UNCW, in the Department of Creative Writing, students who submit plagiarized work will be dismissed from the Master of Fine Arts or the Bachelor of Fine Arts program."
UNCW practices a zero-tolerance policy for violence and harassment of any kind. To report an incident, contact the campus police at 910.962-2222, the Wilmington police at 911, or UNCW CARE at 910.962-2273.
"UNCW takes all forms of interpersonal violence very seriously. When students disclose, first or third-hand, to faculty or staff about sexual misconduct, domestic violence, dating violence and/or stalking, this information must be reported to the administration in order to ensure that students' rights are protected, appropriate resources are offered, and the need for further investigation is explored to maintain campus safety. There are three confidential resources who do not need to report interpersonal violence: UNCW CARE, the Student Health Center, and the Counseling Center. If you want to speak to someone in confidence, these resources are available, including CARE's 24-hour crisis line at 910.512-4821."
