General Information
History majors are eligible to pursue internships with our local partners. Students who complete an internship earn credit for History 498. Internships are offered in the Fall and Spring only. The department does not offer summer internships for credit.
Eligibility
To apply, a student must have already completed 60 credit hours with a minimum 2.0 overall GPA. A student must also have the recommendation of a history advisor and have completed HST 290: The Practice of History
Basic requirements for 3 credit hour internship
Over the course of the semester, the student must be on-site for a total of 127 hours. Assuming the internship begins early in the semester, the commitment would be 9-10 hours per week at the site. Some internships require a minimum of 10 hours per week. Note: this HST 498 class does NOT fulfill the two 400-level seminar requirements for History majors.
The internship also carries the following responsibilities: meeting regularly with the History Department internship coordinator; maintaining a weekly journal and log of hours; completing a research paper related to the internship; and, designing a poster illustrating the internship experience.
Getting Started
Plan ahead so you can register for your internship before the semester begins. To do so, meet with Prof. La Vere before the end of previous semester if you want to begin your internship in the next. For example, have your internship set up by the end of the fall semester if you want to intern during the spring semester.
Required forms:
Permission to enroll in an internship: Prof. La Vere will initiate filling this out in consultation with the intern and the site. It will be routed electronically for the appropriate signatures for final CAS approval.
Internship site supervisor resume: Sent electronically in consultation with Prof. La Vere.
