Join MarineQuest as a junior marine farmer who specializes in bringing sea creatures to life (and beyond!). Watch as NC fish make their way through their life cycle in the wild and tanks. Experience a real, live fish farm that raises oysters, scallops, black sea bass, and flounder for science and supper. Get knee-deep in the marine farming life while exploring the saltmarsh and learning how to identify fish in their natural environment! Ever wonder what happens behind the scenes at the aquarium? Wonder no longer: become an aquarist-in-training when we visit the aquarium and witness what it takes to raise hundreds of species of sea creatures at one time! At MarineQuest, you’ll learn from experts at UNCW what it takes to put seafood on the table and fish back in the sea as a Junior Aquaculturist!

Field excursions include:

  • Going to the beach, marsh, fouling station, Center for Marine Science, UNCW Shellfish Hatchery, UNCW Aquaculture Facility, and NC Aquarium

Highlights include:

  • Seining, dip netting and fishing; go snorkeling in shallow sea grass beds; learn microscope skills; zebrafish life cycle study.
