What will students explore and discover? 


MISSION

Students will understand the physics behind how forces of nature impact our coast and be able to identify how specialized engineers work to maintain and support a resilient coastline.

The coast is a dynamic zone!  It is ever changing due to the vast amount of energy that is in motion within the water and wind.  Learn how energy shapes coastal systems, investigate these processes with hands on experiments and engineer solutions to protect our coast from climate change impacts. Ever wonder how engineers design structures for coastal systems? You’ll find out during this TREK.

PREREQUISITES 

  • Must have completed 3rd grade and turn 9 by the start of the program.

HIGHLIGHTS 

  • Meet a Coastal Engineer and conduct experiments to determine how engineered structures can increase coastal resilience.
  • Experience the energy of the ocean with a boogie board and collect wave parameter data.
  • Discover coastal processes that drive sediment transport.
  • Visit a historic coastal engineered structure for a kayaking adventure investigating water quality.
  • Engineer a device to harness ocean energy and wind energy.
  • Travel by boat to a barrier island to examine barrier island dynamics.
  • Design a coastal structure to meet the challenges of a dynamic coast.
