MarineQuest

Professional Learning for Teachers

UNCW MarineQuest is offering workshops throughout the year for teacher to update their knowledge on marine science, gain new scientific research skills, and learn how to keep kids interested in marine science while also meeting new educational standards. Teachers will have the opportunity to meet UNCW professional scientists and learn about citizen science that they can perform in their own classrooms.

By attending these programs, teachers will:

  • Become a member of this new, unique professional learning community
  • Earn MarineQuest credentials, which allow them to borrow equipment and use MQ lab space for lesson development when available. They will also be invited to apply for MQ employment during the summer. (Requires attendance at 4 workshops each year.)
  • Earn Watson College of Education CEU hours, which will count towards the completion of a CEU certificate

There are two types of workshops:

  1. After-school, 3-hour workshops from 4:30 to 7:30pm at the UNCW Center for Marine Science ($15 per workshop)
  2. Full-day field-based workshops from 8:00am to 3:00pm in the field and at the UNCW Center for Marine Science ($30 per workshop)

Programs will meet at the UNCW Center for Marine Science, 5600 Marvin K. Moss Lane, Wilmington, NC 28409. If you have any questions, please contact Harris Muhlstein, MarineQuest School Program Coordinator, at muhlsteinh@uncw.edu or (910) 962-3795.

Upcoming workshops:

April 11, 2018: Ecological Relationships on the Coral Reef
After-School Workshop (4:30-7:30pm)
Learn about relationships in different ocean and coastal ecosystems, and gain teaching techniques to bring back into your classroom. We will discuss coral reef ecology, fouling communities, and the ecological importance of succession. Get hands-on with different dissection and compound microscopes to identify microscopic organisms found right beneath our docks. Learn the tools needed to teach about phylum diversity and competition in our coastal habitat. Click here to register.

June 15, 2018: Field Day in the Salt Marsh
Full-Day, Field-Based (8:00am-3:00pm)
Venture into the field with the MarineQuest team to get hands-on experience on how to introduce your students to the wonders of wetlands. This workshop will focus on the skills necessary in scientific field collections, identification, and assessment. Get wet as we explore our coastline from the water in kayaks and the MQ team shows you how to explain physical oceanography from the water. Click here to register.

August 15, 2018: Field Day at the Beach
Full-Day, Field-Based (8:00am-3:00pm)
Understanding beach geology and ecology is much easier when learning and teaching from the beach. Obtain skills and knowledge necessary to provide students with a visual representation of barrier island migration through beach profiling and erosion mapping. Click here to register.

October TBD: How the Ocean Shapes Weather
After-School Workshop (8:00am-3:00pm)
Meet with experts in the field about monitoring and predicting extreme weather events. Learn from scientists of the Coastal Ocean Research and Monitoring Program about the tools needed for long-term ocean quality monitoring and evaluation. Gain tools to bring to your classroom to introduce students to the importance of our natural resources in the protection of our communities from natural disasters. Click here to register.
