ABOUT THE EXPO
For the 2022 North Carolina Science Festival, UNCW MarineQuest and Battleship North Carolina are joining forces to co-host the Coastal Climate Science and Engineering Expo. The Expo is free and open to the public.
Southeastern North Carolina has experienced the severe impacts of climate change over the past few years, from inland flooding and tornadoes to coastal hurricanes and sea level rise. Many of the rural and underserved communities were particularly hard hit. The Expo will provide opportunities for citizens in these communities and our region of the state to learn about their coastal location, the science of climate change and ways in which scientists and engineers are mitigating its impact, and what communities can do to build resiliency. The Expo itself will be held along the bank of the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, a site that perfectly illustrates the challenges of climate change due to the flooding it experiences. Different community partners will host interactive, family-friendly stations that showcase what their organizations are doing to study the forces of climate change, evaluate their impacts on our coastal communities, and ultimately offer solutions to help build resiliency.
The Expo will be held outdoors (*light rain or shine) at Battleship Park on Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Expo in the park is free and open to the public. Attendees can purchase tickets to tour the Battleship. Free Admission to the Battleship for Children under 11 years (must be with a ticketed Adult) will be provided during the Expo. *Please check back 24 hours before the event for weather update.
