Critical Friends Assessment Academy Taking Place in June

If you are a faculty member interested in assessment, please consider joining the Office of Institutional Research and Planning as it hosts UNCW’s Critical Friends Assessment Academy (CFAA) June 21 and 22. Critical Friends Assessment Academy is a professional learning community that provides a common knowledge base for engaging in assessment and continuous improvement of assessment practices with the hope of contributing to strengthening and improving programs and student learning. Both first-time and former faculty participants seeking to refresh their assessment knowledge and skills are welcome and encouraged to attend. Those who attend will in turn serve as a resource during their academic program’s annual assessment process.

This Academy is based on the Critical Friends Group model used in PK-12 schools aimed at improving teaching and learning, later transformed for higher education with a focus on supporting and improving program and student learning assessment. CFAA emphasizes the importance of assessment work while providing a respectful atmosphere where collaboration across academic programs and constructive feedback is encouraged. Participants will have the opportunity to apply strategies and knowledge gained while working on their program’s assessment reports.

The Academy will be led by Jaci Webb-Dempsey (Director of Program Assessment, Accreditation, and Development for the CSB, CHHS, and WCE), Terrell Bryant (Curriculum and Assessment Specialist, CAS), and Kimberly Miller (Director of Institutional Effectiveness). Participants will receive an $800 stipend ($400 per day) and lunch will be provided each day. The number of participants is limited to 25 and spaces are filled on a “first come, first reserved” basis. If you are interested in participating or have questions, please email Jaci Webb-Dempsey ( by Friday, May 27.
