Department of History

Prospective StudentsLibrary Chair

Those interested in applying to one of UNCW's M.A. programs in History are encouraged to phone or e-mail the department's Graduate Coordinator, Dr. W. Taylor Fain. Arrange to visit the campus, meet with faculty members whose work interests you, and perhaps sit in on a graduate course. The members of the department are happy to discuss the joys (and perhaps tribulations) of the study of the past and to extol the benefits of enrolling at UNCW.

Admissions Requirements

As stipulated in the university's Graduate Catalog, applicants are required to submit the following to the Graduate School:

  1. An application for graduate admission.
  2. Official transcripts of all college work (undergraduate and graduate).
  3. Official scores on the Graduate Record Examination.
  4. Three recommendations by individuals in professionally relevant fields; at least two must be from academics.
  5. Research paper or suitable equivalent. Applications for non-degree status will not be accepted.

Note: The online M.A. for professional history educators requires an additional application essay. Please follow the following guidelines when writing it:

  • In 500 words, explain your interests in history. Avoid empty generalizations like “I’ve always loved history.” Instead, tell with greater specificity what historical themes or questions interest you most. Also, explain why you believe UNCW’s online M.A. program would benefit you intellectually and professionally.

The minimum requirements for admission include

  • Satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (verbal, quantitative and analytical).
  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university or its equivalent in a foreign institution, and an overall academic record with a "B" average or better in the basic courses prerequisite to the area of proposed graduate study.
  • Application may be made through the University of North Carolina's Graduate School.
