GLS 592: Social Darwinism, Eugenics, and the Holocaust

Instructor: Rod Hagley

In the beginning of the course, we will review the biological bases of Darwin's Theory Evolution and Basic Mendelian Genetics, and how the merger of the twodisciplines came to become known as The New Synthesis in the 1920's. With this introduction to the science, we will investigate the origin of the so-called Social Darwinism and the subsequent emergences of the pseudo science of Eugenics in the United States and in Europe. Finally we will attempt to understand how this view of humanity and the world lead to the race-based policies of Nazi RacialHygiene in Germany in 1930,s and 1940's and unlimitedly to the tragedy of the Holocaust.
