Course Description

GLS 592: Identifying Ireland

An interdisciplinary examination of Ireland's history, literature, politics, and people in the context of past and present societal transformations. Topics include Ireland's mythological origins, the Great Hunger, the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the Travellers (Irish "gypsies"), and the contemporary phenomenon of the "Celtic Tiger." Readings draw from poetry, fiction, drama, and historical and anthropological texts.
