Financial Aid

Verification is a U.S. Department of Education process that each institution uses to confirm that the data reported on your FAFSA form is accurate.  Please note that using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) reduces the chance of a file being selected for verification and if still selected, less documentation will be required for those who complete the DRT.

How do you know if you are selected by UNCW?

You’ll first be notified once you’ve completed the FAFSA and receive your Student Aid Report from the Department of Education.  Then around December, you’ll receive a verification notification at your UNCW email address. The email will reflect exactly what is required and will also direct you to view additional guidance on SeaNet under Student Requirements and under Active Messages. You may mail, email, or fax required documents to our office.  If you choose to email, please redact or otherwise obscure sensitive data (SSNs) while ensuring that the student name and ID number remain visible on each page.  Completing the necessary documents is required in order to receive a financial aid award.  Respond immediately to avoid the possibility of missing out on state and/or institutional aid.  Please do not submit documents until you are selected for verification.

Due to the redacted nature of IRS documentation; Tax Return, Wage and Income and Verification of Non-Filing documents requested from the IRS must be sent to you directly, and then a copy should be submitted to our office. Student ID numbers are required on ALL documents. Documents submitted without student ID numbers may not be accounted for properly.

1/4/2019 - At this current time, the "Get Transcript Online" and "Get Transcript by Mail" services via the IRS website have both been offline since the beginning of last week. While we have no control over this process, we do hope these links are back online in the next few days which will allow you to request these items accordingly. We do appreciate your patience and understanding on this matter.

Why is your file being selected?

There are several possibilities for being selected for FAFSA verification. Here are the main reasons:

  • You were randomly selected.
  • The submitted FAFSA application has incomplete or conflicting data.
  • Your data fell into a system of edits used to identify the most commonly made errors.

How long does it take to be verified?

Processing time of verification documents is typically 7-10 business days. The status of your form(s) and verification can be viewed on SeaNet under Student Requirements and under Active Messages.
