Award-Winning Composer Carlos Rafael Rivera to Lead Music Virtual Workshops

Renowned guitarist and Emmy-winning composer Carlos Rafael Rivera will lead two virtual workshops in April, including a Q&A session. The workshops are part of the UNCW Department of Music’s “Resonance” series. The public is invited to participate in both sessions.

Rivera’s work for film and television includes Netflix’s Godless (Emmy), The Queen’s Gambit and Firefly Lane; Universal Pictures’ A Walk Among the Tombstones; and ABC’s Scrubs. He is also an assistant professor and director of the Media Writing and Production Program in the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

On April 7 at 1 p.m. Rivera will teach a Guitar Master Class that UNCW classical guitar majors performing compositions by Rivera and others. He will host a discussion of composing music for film, television and other productions during a Q&A at 1 p.m. April 14.

Rivera, a Randy Newman protégé has worked with Arturo Sandoval, Colin Currie, Chanticleer, Cavatina Duo, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the American Composers Orchestra and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, among others. His diverse musical influence reflects his upbringing in Central America and the United States. As a guitarist, he performed as an opening act for The Who at the Hollywood Bowl and recorded studio sessions for Island/Def Jam.
