The ELMS team has over thirty-five years of combined experience in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and conducting research in the field. The team provides opportunities for learning and teaching in the field of ESL through certification programs, professional development, and community-based learning support. Whether you are new to the field or a professional seeking additional certification or training, the ELMS team is here is to help!

Dr. N. Eleni Pappamihiel, ELMS Program Director

Dr. Eleni PappamihielDr. Eleni Pappamihiel has been with the ELMS Project since its inception in September, 2011. Dr. Pappamihiel began her teaching career in Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools in 1988 as a mainstream Spanish teacher. Several years later, she moved into the field of English as a Second Language, a fledgling field in North Carolina at that time. Since that time, she has taught ESL at every grade level, including adults. She has taught or conducted research in North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Florida and internationally. Her main area of research focuses on improving academic outcomes for English language learners in the mainstream classroom and includes work in co-teaching and digital storytelling as an instructional strategy.

Dr. Allen Lynn, Assistant Professor - ESL

Dr. Allen Lynn comes to us from South Georgia. Throughout the years he has been everything from a grave digger to a Peace Corps Volunteer. He is now an assistant professor of ESL at UNCW. In addition to preparing teachers of ESL, Dr. Lynn enjoys spending time with his wife and schnoodle. He is also fond of vegetable gardening and Brazilian jiu jitsu.

Beth joined the ELMS project as the Project Coordinator in April of 2014. She is responsible for ELMS program offerings, managing the budget, and overseeing instructional design of the ELMS professional development. Prior to joining the ELMS team, Beth was an instructional technology facilitator for New Hanover County Schools and enjoyed a 20 year teaching career. Most recently, she completed a master's in Instructional Technology from UNCW. In her free time, Beth enjoys riding her bike, going to the beach and spending time with family and friends.
