Welcome to the
Betty Holden Stike
Education Laboratory at UNCW

The Betty Stike Education Laboratory in the Watson College of Education at UNC Wilmington is designed as a critical component of our teacher education programs. Students practice the methods they are learning in their courses by teaching a child in a one-on-one setting.

Tutoring is designed as a positive experience, focusing on the child's strengths, needs, and interests. Students are coached as they learn new strategies and skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Open communication with parents is also an important part of the Ed Lab experience.

While we use the term tutoring, the time our future teachers spend with their children is more appropriately called one-on-one instruction. Ed Lab teachers plan individualized lesson plans for each session.

Ed Lab Tutoring Information Fall 2020!

As of 8/21/2020 All tutoring spots have been filled for the fall semester! If you would like to be placed on the wait list or to be included in the contact list for the spring semsester, please email Brian Brinkley (brinkleyb@uncw.edu). Thank you!

The Ed Lab will offer ONLINE tutoring in reading and math for elementary-aged children during the fall semester 2020. Tutors will complete 20-25 hours of tutoring between August 31 and November 20, 2020. Tutors and parents will decide on a regular schedule (usually two days a week for about an hour...a little more if tutoring includes both reading and math). The tutoring fees are reduced for the fall semester - $100 for the whole semester of tutoring - and will be paid using an online payment system. Because of the reduced fees, we will not offer any other discounts for the fall semester.

To participate in tutoring, we ask that you have reliable internet access as well as a laptop or desktop computer. Mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones have not been useful for the interactive teaching techniques our tutors use. Note that Ed Lab tutors plan and teach individualized lessons as part of their teacher preparation coursework, therefore tutoring time is not used to complete schoolwork or homework.

If you are interested in being included on the contact list for fall tutoring, please email Brian Brinkley at brinkleyb@uncw.edu or leave a message on the Ed Lab's voicemail (910) 962-3633. Please leave your phone number and email address. Tutoring spots are only available for the number of tutors taking classes this fall, so call or email today!
