Distance Education

Getting Started

To begin your journey into distance education or online learning, you need to first be admitted to UNCW. Visit the admissions page and select the student category in which you fall from the left menu.

Academic advising is completed at the departmental level. Please contact the program coordinator or department chair to inquire about how advising takes place. The program contact information is listed on either the Distance Education-Extension Sites page or the Online Programs & Degrees page.

Financial Aid Resources

Detailed information on financial aid is available through UNCW's Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid website.

The following link on the financial aid webpage will provide you with a tutorial and valuable information to assist you in applying for financial aid through SeaNet.

Scholarship Information

Scholarships are a financial resource for students that do not have to be repaid. Scholarships may be awarded to a student through an application process, but some students are selected solely on university records with no application. Scholarships may be offered from a variety of different sources including the university's many departments, outside agencies, and state agencies.

If applying for a scholarship requiring financial need, the student must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA).

Computer Requirements

Software Requirements

It is recommended that you have Microsoft Office when taking any online course. Depending on your course, you may be able to use other word processing, spreadsheet, or presentation software. If you are unsure what is acceptable, contact your instructor before your class begins.

UNCW currently uses Blackboard 9.1 to deliver courses online.

Hardware Requirements

It is recommended that your computer/laptop be no more than 3 years old, and you have access to a high-speed internet connection. Each computer operating system and internet browser will vary so it is important to check for compatibility before beginning a course using Blackboard 9.1.
