Voice of Inclusion Certificate

Are you committed to inclusiveness and embrace unique contributions? Are you passionate about fostering a culture that reflects our values of diversity and globalization? The Big 8 Elements of Identity are commonly described as age, class, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, race, religion, and ability.   

What is it?

Those employees who desire to pursue a beginner, intermediate, or advanced Voice of Inclusion Certificate commit to experiencing learning programs and engagement opportunities sponsored by UNCW's Human Resource's Employee Leadership, Learning and Engagement Department's Inclusion and Diversity and Community ServiceOffice of the Arts, Office of Diversity and InclusionCenter for Teaching Excellence, academic department lectures, and virtual learning (ie. online, books, podcasts, TED Talks).  

NOTE: Desired certificate level must be attained within two years. 

Beginner Certificate Level

Hours of Learning: 10
Core Curriculum
Those who wish to achieve the beginner certificate level should complete a total of 10 hours of learning, including the following:

  • One 60-minute inclusion and diversity consultation with Kimberly McLaughlin-Smith
  • One ally training 
  • One cultural event or community service opportunity
  • Four hours of formal classroom lectures or workshops
  • Note: Virtual learning cannot exceed three hours and must be pre-approved by Kimberly McLaughlin-Smith

Intermediate Certificate Level

Hours of Learning: 20
Core Curriculum
Those who wish to achieve the beginner certificate level should complete a total of 20 hours of learning, including the following:

  • Two 60-minute inclusion and diversity consultations with Kimberly McLaughlin-Smith
  • Two ally trainings
  • Two cultural events and/or community service opportunities
  • Six hours of formal classroom lectures or workshops
  • Note: Virtual learning cannot exceed eight hours and must be pre-approved by Kimberly McLaughlin-Smith

Advanced Certificate Level

Hours of Learning: 30
Core Curriculum
Those who wish to achieve the beginner certificate level should complete a total of 30 hours of learning, including the following:

  • Four 60-minute inclusion and diversity consultations with Kimberly McLaughlin-Smith
  • Three ally trainings
  • Three cultural events and/or community service opportunities
  • 10 hours of formal classroom lectures or workshops
  • Note: Virtual learning cannot exceed 15 hours and must be pre-approved by Kimberly McLaughlin-Smith
