WHA-UNCW Community Campus

About Us

Community CampusThe Wilmington Housing Authority (WHA) and the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) have a long history of working together. Many students and faculty have assisted with research, programming and completed internships through this partnership. However, over the years, it became apparent that the partnership could be even stronger if a centralized location was available for students, faculty and the community to work together. From this thought, an idea was born. With this thought came several years of meetings between UNCW and WHA representatives in which they worked diligently to determine how this could be done.

On May 20, 2008, Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo and then Chairman, L.S. "Bo" Dean, of the Wilmington Housing Authority Board of Directors signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the community center in the Hillcrest Community that UNCW and WHA would have a working partnership. At that time a key to a WHA building was given to Leslie Hossfeld, professor of public sociology and the Community Campus found a home. Since then, the Community Campus has been a key source of resources for the surrounding community and a hub for student service learning, internships and volunteer experiences.

The partnership between UNCW and WHA is continuously growing. An advisory board with Community Campus founding members Leslie Hossfeld, L. S. "Bo" Dean, Vernice Hamilton, Hattie McIver, and Kathy McDaniel still operates with a full complement of perspectives and leadership. Each partner works diligently to uphold the agreements and expectations that were laid forth in the Memorandum of Understanding. UNCW faculty, staff and students are a visible presence in the community and are working side by side with WHA residents and employees to build the partnership into a lasting and sustainable collaboration.
