Bermuda Field Course 2011 :: Daily Report

Day 01 | Thursday, March 10, 2011

Today we departed Wilmington for Bermuda to begin BIO 480 Field Methods in Biology, a collaborative course graciously funded by a private donation from the Gillings family to UNCW and the University of Southampton, UK. For many of us this is our last college spring break, and we could not imagine spending it anywhere else.

Flying into Bermuda was a unique trip. The airport runway just sticks out into the bay so, right before you land, you feel like you are about to crash into the ocean. The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) station is located right next to the airport. It is a complex of older, white-washed buildings, some with views looking out into Ferry Reach, the waterway separating St. George's Island from the rest of Bermuda.

Tonight we are meeting with students from the University of Southampton. Looking forward to tomorrow, our first day in paradise…
