Center for Marine Science

Director's Welcome

The university's focus on marine science has a history that spans over 40 years. Beginning as the Institute for Marine Biomedical Research, located near Wrightsville Beach, the Center for Marine Science now supports coastal and marine research, education, and outreach on the main College Road campus, at the Myrtle Grove CREST campus, and at the aquaculture facility on Wrightsville Beach. Coastal and marine sciences now extend throughout the academic experience at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, our state’s coastal university, with work that is global in extent.

The Center for Marine Science provides support to the variety of disciplines encompassed by coastal and marine sciences at UNCW through targeted facilities; including shared core instrumentation, running seawater capabilities, a small boat fleet and ships capable of coastal ocean work, classrooms and research labs, pilot project funding, outreach activities, student and programmatic support, and engagement with the regional community and beyond. The Center for Marine Science at UNC Wilmington is dedicated to providing an environment that fosters a multidisciplinary approach to questions in basic and applied coastal and marine research and to promoting understanding of our coastal environment.

We invite you to explore CMS through the virtual tour provided on this website as well as the summaries of our monthly activities, descriptions of facilities, and upcoming events.
