UNCW Student Nurses Association Students Attend NSNA Conference

On Nov. 2, eight School of Nursing students attended the mid-year National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) conference in San Diego, California. The students, who are members of the UNCW Association of Nursing Students, were led by faculty advisors Penny Sauer and Kellie Griggs.

The NSNA is dedicated to fostering the professional development of nursing students.

Student President, Scarlett Wall; Fundraising Chair, Laila Jefferson; Vice President, Haley Chapman; and SON student, Amanda Ellis learned about the roles and responsibilities of the president, board and treasurer. They learned about the leadership roles of school chapter leadership. They also earned the American Red Cross Disaster Health and Sheltering Certification.

Class of December 2017 students, Anna Peacock, Jordan Standley, Darby Smith and Abby Blankenship learned about topics focused on new nurses, including The Leading Edge of Nursing, Pharmacology Made Insanely Easy, Malnutrition and the Hospitalized Patient and the Nursing Specialty Showcase. In addition, they participated in career development sessions.

Penny and Kellie attended faculty advisor workshops, where they learned how to be effective association advisors. The NSNA Leadership University provided information on how to build student leadership in the association at the school, state and national level.

“Overall, everyone is excited to implement what we learned.” Penny said.
