Dean’s Welcome

Welcome to the 2017 fall semester! It is so nice to see everyone back from the summer—rested, energetic and wearing big smiles. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) team for a wonderful 2016-17 academic year. We made great progress on our 2016-17 strategic priorities. I would also like to welcome our new faculty and staff members to TEAM CHHS.

The beginning of fall semester is an exciting time on the UNCWonderful campus: time full of great energy, excitement and hope. The start of the new academic year also brings an opportunity to fully embrace the new CHHS strategic plan. Our vision is bold: We enhance health and quality of life. We create transformative learning experiences, advance knowledge through research and scholarly activity, and engage local and global communities.

To achieve our vision and mission, we are committed to the following strategic goals:

  • Empower students through excellence in teaching and learning;
  • Foster excellence in research, scholarly activity and innovation;
  • Engage in strong academic-community partnerships;
  • Facilitate involvement in professional service activities and leadership roles;
  • Promote sustainability and continuous quality improvement.

These five goals and the 30 objectives contained in our plan will be pursued in an environment that promotes the collaborative exchange of thoughts and ideas, affirms human dignity and respects each individual. Our strategic plan booklet can be found here. In addition to implementing the university’s Strategic Plan, we will have four additional priorities this year:

  • Continue our pursuit of joie de vivre;
  • Break ground on the new Allied Health/Health Sciences building;
  • Expand our curriculum by developing new degree programs as informed by the work of Education Advisory Board;
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications, marketing and advancement effort.

The CHHS Leadership Team will need your active involvement to accomplish these priorities. Please be on the lookout for specific invitations to engage in the present and future of CHHS’ success.

Our college values interprofessional collaboration, community engagement and impact, and team implementation science, which represent the three pillars of CHHS. Together we make a difference by working together, reaching out and enhancing lives!

This is an exciting time to be a member of TEAM CHHS. While I am so proud of what we have already accomplished during our start-up phase, I am thankful and humbled by the hard work and dedication of the faculty and staff, who, collectively, are the heart and soul of UNCW. CHHS faculty and staff are simply the BEST! The CHHS Leadership Team pledges to continue our work to develop a culture that values each individual and promotes the conditions necessary for joyful work.

CHHSTalk is a stakeholder communication tool. The purpose is to communicate about the many things going on within the CHHS to remind us to remember why we do what we do. That is to say, this e-newsletter is CHHS being its best self! It is our hope that you find joy while reading CHHSTalk. Please send your feedback and future story ideas to

Be sure to mark Friday, Sept. 15 on your calendars for the CHHS Fall 2017 Convocation, which will take place from 3 – 5 p.m. at the UNCW Amphitheatre. It is going to be AWESOME! Leslie Owens, the CHHS events coordinator, will be sharing more information about this event in the very near future. Please encourage all CHHS students to attend!

I am confident that the 2017-18 academic year will be a great year for CHHS!
