CHHS Nursing and Public Health Studies Students Gained Hands-On Experience at Navassa Health Fair

On Saturday, October 22, CHHS Nursing and Public Health Studies students spent their day putting on a health fair for the Town of Navassa residents.

The students provided screenings, teachings about healthy behaviors and they collected assessment data from Navassa residents. Other community organizations came out to provide Navassa residents with information about area health resources and services. DJ Tony Burgess provided music, and a dance party broke out, which highlighted the importance of having fun and being active.

The Navassa Community Economic and Environmental Redevelopment Corporation provided food and refreshments for the residents after they finished visiting with the vendors and UNCW students.  Residents were also able to get information about how they can be actively engaged with the environmental issues in their town.

The event allowed students to get first-hand experience working on a community engagement project.  They were able to interact one-on-one with residents, as well as do planning and implementation for the event.
