Research and Scholarship

The faculty in the School of Nursing actively contribute to the production of new knowledge in the nursing and clinical research field through research and professional collaborations with interdisciplinary and inter-professional teams in the College of Health and Human Services, UNC system universities, as well as with other agencies and universities across the country. Additionally, faculty place emphasis on curriculum and program design, increasing opportunities to better server students in the SON programs.

Faculty Research and Grant Highlights

SON faculty at Sigma ConferenceUNCW Faculty members Tammy Arms, Patty White, former SON director Laurie Badzek, and Michelle McEwen Campbell  represented CHHS down under while attending the Sigma International Research Congress conference. They presented a symposium on inter professional education, and Michelle presented her poster on OB.

April MatthiasAssociate Professor April Matthias was recently awarded two grants to complete her nursing history research. The grants—American Association for the History of Nursing H-15 Research Grant ($3000) and The Karyn and Terrance Holm Visiting Scholar Award ($1500)—are funding for archive research to study early distance education, correspondence courses in nursing that operated in the early 20th century. SON clinical research assistant professor Jennifer McCall received the Cahill Research Grant Award to investigate the marine natural project Brevenal® which may help people with lung obstruction.  The product has been shown to increase lung clearance in animal models and may assist in the treatment of pulmonary diseases such as COPD, asthma and cystic fibrosis. AWHONN ConferenceAssistant professor Kellie Griggs was the keynote speaker at the NC AWHONN State conference on April 27 in Greensboro.  Griggs’ presentation was on the advocacy through policy, legislation and funding with a focus on enhancing access to care for women and infant health, decreasing maternal mortality, and increasing providers and funding.

Lorie Sigmon delivering a presentation at the National Academies of PractAssistant professor Lorie Sigmon delivered a presentation at the National Academies of Practice on April 13 in Atlanta.   The presentation was entitled “Implementing Experiential Interprofessional Learning with Nursing and Medical Students to Improve Patient Safety.”
