  • Assistant Professor Wins Distinguished Faculty Award
    Dr. Stephanie Turrise , assistant professor of nursing, was presented with the J. Marshall Crews Distinguished Faculty Award by Kimberly McNeill ’86, ’97M, chair of the Alumni Association Awards and Scholarship Committee. The award  honors a faculty member who exhibits leadership through service and student support, in honor of the late UNCW faculty member and administrator Crews.  Criteria for selection include service, student support effort, leadership roles and community service and outreach efforts.

  • Assistant Professor Elected to Board
    to Dr. Kellie Griggs, an assistant professor in the School of Nursing, who has been elected as a member of the board of directors of the Association for Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Health (AWHONNH) for three years term. AWHONNH empowers and supports nurses caring for women, newborns, and their families through research, education and advocacy.

  • CHHS  Mourns Death of Dr. Micah Scott
    The College of Health and Human Services is saddened by the death of Dr. Micah Scott, PhD, FNP-BC, who died Thursday, July 11, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. She brought more than 30 years of nursing experience across specialties when she began in College of Health and Human Services’ School of Nursing as the family nurse practitioner program coordinator in August 2016.Her research interests included military and veterans care and families clinical simulation in nurse practitioner education.   • Congratulations to Dr. Soo Kim-Godwin and Dr. April Matthias. They have both been selected as recipients of the 2014 Discere Aude Award for outstanding mentoring of students. The Discere Aude Award recognizes faculty and staff who were nominated by our most academically successful undergraduate students. Congratulations to Soo and April on their great work and commitment to their RNBS students.
  • The School of Nursing received notification on December 14, 2014 from CCNE that our CIPR (Continuous Improvement Progress Report) has been reviewed by the CCNE Board of Commissioners and determined that "the programs continue to meet all accreditation standards". Our next accreditation report will be due in 2018. Congratulations to the faculty and staff on their commitment to excellence!

  • Congratulations to Barb Snyder, Simulation Learning Center, she is the recipient of the 2014 Staff Global Travel Grant in the amount of $2500 which will fund her study abroad trip with Dr. Fox and group when they travel to Belize in March, 2015.

  • Dr. Jeanne Kemppainen has been selected as a fellow in the prestigious American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Kemppainen will be inducted into the academy at the Academy's 2014 Transforming Health, Driving Policy Conference on October 18, 2014, in Washington, DC.
  • Two Prelicensure Students Received National Awards in Gerontology: Three leadership awards were announced from the National Gerontological Nursing Association (NGNA) and two of the recipients are prelicensure nursing students from UNCW. Alicia Iammatteo and Casey Patula (Prelicensure Students, Class of May 2015) will receive a 2014 Gerontological Nursing Student Leadership Award at the NGNA's Convention in October 2-4 in San Antonio, Texas. Ali and Casey were two of the three students nationally selected to receive this award for their essay. Both students have a passion for working with the older adult, Ali has plans to pursue graduate studies as a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner following her undergraduate studies and Casey plans to return to work at Duke University Hospital and work with geriatric pulmonary transplant patients. Congratulations to Ali and Casey, we are very proud of you! Special thanks for Dr. Tammy Arms for serving as their faculty mentor and sponsor.

  • Graduate of the FNP Program Receives National Award: Jessica Watkins Smith, MSN, RN, FNP-C (Graduate of the FNP program, December 2010) received the 2012 Nursing for Women's Health Excellence in Writing Award for her manuscript from her graduate project on polycystic ovary disease at the 2012 AWHONN Convention (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) in Washington, D.C. The complete citation is: Smith, J.W. & Taylor, J.S. (2011). Polycystic ovary syndrome: Evidence-based strategies for managing symptoms and preventing long-term sequelae.
