4+1 Combined Programs

Our 4 + 1 Combined Programs allow UNCW undergraduates in exercise science, public health and recreation therapy to begin taking graduate courses by their senior year. These courses will count toward both their undergraduate degree and the M.S. in Applied Gerontology, which can be completed in just one additional year.

Exercise Science, B.S. / Applied Gerontology, M.S.

The purpose of the combined Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science and Master of Science degree in Applied Gerontology program is to offer an accelerated path toward a Master of Science degree that prepares graduates to work in healthcare and community-based settings serving older adults. Graduates from this program are also trained to be leaders in the intersections of exercise science, gerontology, and wellness.

Public Health, B.S. / Applied Gerontology, M.S.

The purpose of the combined Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health and Master of Science degree in Applied Gerontology is to offer an accelerated path toward a Master of Science degree that prepares graduates with knowledge, skills, and competencies within public health and gerontology. These educational experiences prepare graduates to work in health-related and community-based settings serving older adults, and to be leaders in the fields of public health, gerontology, and healthcare.

Recreation Therapy, B.A. / Applied Gerontology, M.S.

The purpose of the combined Bachelor of Arts degree in Recreation Therapy and Master of Science degree in Applied Gerontology is to offer an accelerated path toward a Master of Science degree that prepares graduates with knowledge, skills, and competencies to practice recreation therapy in healthcare and community-based settings serving older adults. Graduates are also trained to be leaders in the field of RT, gerontology, and healthcare. This preparation prioritizes the development of skills via applied learning experiences, practica, internships, and community engagement. Furthermore, student outcomes emphasize critical thinking and evidence-based practices as means of assisting older adult clients and organizations to serve them in reaching their goals and maximize the quality of life for older adults.
