Sue Combs, Ph.D., M.A., Professor

Sue CombsDr. Sue Combs is entering her 32nd year of teaching at UNCW. Prior to her arrival in Wilmington, Dr. Combs was the Director of Activity Therapy for 15 years at Orient State Institute in Ohio. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1990 and Full Professor in 2010. She serves as the Program Coordinator for Physical Education and Health (graduate), and Healthful Living Education (undergraduate) and previously served as Chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at UNCW.

Sue received her B.S. in Physical Education and Health from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, M.A. in Physical Education and Health from The Ohio State University, and Ph.D. in Adapted Physical Education from The Ohio State University. Dr. Combs has been awarded multiple-teaching and service accolades throughout career. A few of these include the Teaching Excellence-Board of Trustees Award, the Distinguished Teaching Professorship Award, the Distinguished Scholarly Engagement and Public Service Award, Alumni Citizenship Award from The Ohio State, Human Relations Educator of the Year Award from New Hanover County, and the YMCA’s Women of Achievement Award. 

Dr. Combs’ primary research interests are attitudes towards inclusion of individuals with disabilities (IWDs); developing inclusive physical activities for IWDs; best practices in Higher Education for student athletes.
