Student Success Center Adds New Member to Team

In January, the Student Success Center hired Carie Kempton as the newest student success advisor for the college.

Previous to CHHS, Kempton worked in the UNCW Department of English, where she served as the department’s administrative associate.

Kempton is currently completing her Masters of Arts degree in the UNCW Conflict Management and Resolution Program and has received her Master of Science and education specialist degree in counseling from UNC Greensboro. In addition, she also possesses a Bachelor or Arts in English and Latin from Wake Forest University.

In college, Kempton worked as a tutor of writing and Latin, and during her junior year she attended a tutoring workshop presented by graduate counseling students. Instead of the teaching techniques she expected to learn, the presenters talked about how to improve as a tutor by taking a holistic view of each student’s life rather than focusing solely on academics.

“I was fascinated by their approach and began to research counseling graduate programs,” Kempton said, “and ended up earning my masters in counseling at UNCG.”

As a an advisor, Kempton aims to maintain a holistic understanding of each individual student she advises, build relationships in which each student feels safe and confident and to empower each student to create and achieve their own academic, career and personal goals.

“I am thrilled to be a student success advisor,” she said. “This job is the perfect setting for me to use my interpersonal and organizational skills to support students in pursuing their academic, career and personal goals. I feel so blessed to be part of the SSC and part of UNCW.”

In her free time, Kempton likes to read novels, spend time with friends and is currently learning modern calligraphy. Sometimes, she enjoys simply sitting at the beach, enjoying the waves and sunshine.

Kempton is originally from Durham, N.C. Her first day at CHHS was on Feb. 1.
