SHAHS to Host Halloween-Themed Parent’s Night Out Event

The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences’ Healthful Living and Fitness Education Program (HLFE) will host a Halloween-themed Parents Night Out event on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 5 – 9 p.m. in the UNCW Hanover Gymnasium.

The event will be themed based on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and will incorporate a research study on literacy-based physical activity and how it might motivate children to read.

Participation in the research study is voluntary. Event is free and open to all UNCW families, including parents who do not wish to participate in the study. Children ages 4-12 are welcome but they must be potty trained.

Donations to the event will help the Healthful Living and Fitness Education Program travel to professional conferences. Contact HLFE Program Coordinator Amelia Huelskamp at huelskampa@uncw.edu for more information.

"Parents' Night Out is a win on three different fronts,” Huelskamp said. “It gives parents in the UNCW community an evening to relax, it gives their kids an extra chance to be active and social, and it gives my HLFE majors an applied learning experience."

Drop off begins at 5 p.m. All children must be picked up by a parent or guardian no later than 9 p.m. Parents must sign a waiver at check in and will have the option to consent to participate in the literacy research study. Kids are welcome to wear Halloween costumes, but running shoes are a must.

Healthy snacks will be available for children, but not a meal. Make sure to feed children before drop off.

RSVP to PEHClub@uncw.edu  by Thursday, Oct. 17 to ensure your child’s spot at Parents’ Night Out!
