Gerontology Program & AARP Partner to Share Vaccination Info

5/21 – This spring, gerontology students and faculty worked with the AARP to contact older adults living in Robeson and Swain counties to provide information about COVID-19 vaccine eligibility, how to sign up for an appointment and who to contact with additional questions.

AARP organized the calling campaign, which focused on counties where relatively low numbers of older adults have been vaccinated, including rural counties with large portions of minoritized populations. The purpose was to ensure older adults had the information they needed to make informed decisions regarding the vaccines.

“Older adults and members of minoritized populations have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 in terms of susceptibility to and severity of infection as well as likelihood of being hospitalized and dying from the virus,” Gerontology Program Coordinator Tina Newsham said.

North Carolina was the first state to successfully contact everyone on their AARP calling campaign list. More than 400 households were provided information related to the vaccine.
