Steve Elliott, Interim Director of School of Health and Applied Human SciencesSteve Elliott, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and Director of the School of
Health and Applied Human Sciences (SHAHS) within the College of Health and
Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW).

His academic career began in 2003 at Georgia Southern University (GSU) as an
Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology. In 2006, he
returned to his alma mater, UNC Wilmington, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Applied Human Sciences at UNCW. After four years at UNCW, he was promoted to Associate Professor and awarded tenure. In 2010, his academic unit evolved from a department into a school (SHAHS). As part of this transition, he moved into the position of Associate Director in 2011. In 2017, he was named the Interim Director of the SHAHS, and in mid-2018, he was named the Director.

He received his B.S. in Physical Education and Health from UNCW and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and Ph.D. in Education (Kinesiology/Pedagogy) from the University of Virginia (UVA). At UVA, he was named the Outstanding Doctoral Student for the Curry School of Education and has been awarded multiple-teaching accolades throughout his career, including the Teaching Excellence Award at GSU and the Chancellor’s Teaching Award at UNCW. In 2015, he was one of two UNCW faculty members to receive the Distinguished Teaching Professorship Award.

As a teacher-scholar, he has authored or co-authored numerous articles and has made more than 50 presentations at state, regional, national, and international conferences; and has served and chaired many committees at various levels.
