June 2018

Message from Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli

Dear Seahawk Community,

UNCW started the month of June by welcoming hundreds of new Seahawks and their families to campus for orientation. We also introduced the UNCW experience to future potential students through exciting academic programs, including STEAM Team and Summer Ventures.

UNCW continued its focus on enhancing services for military students through ongoing participation in the national “Hiring Our Heroes” initiative. The university also announced a new partnership with Wayne Community College designed to ease successful WCC graduates’ transition to UNCW, increasing enrollment opportunities for students from rural areas.

The summer provides many faculty and students with much-needed time for research. Read more about the “imagination driving research” on our campus in the latest edition of UNCW Magazine.

In early June, UNCW announced that Assistant Professor Till Wagner (physics and physical oceanography) is leading a multi-institutional team that received National Science Foundation grants totaling more than $578,000 to study icebergs. Professors Lawrence Cahoon (biological oceanography) and Mark Galizio (psychology) and Associate Professor Bill Bolduc (communication studies) also earned accolades in their fields.

We rounded out the month by announcing UNCW Presents’ 27th season – make plans now to enjoy a year of dynamic and diverse arts and cultural presentations. And don’t forget about the Lumina Festival slated for July 12-29 – celebrate the summer with jazz, opera, theater, poetry, the Hooked on Arts street fair and more events sponsored by UNCW and our community partners.

Go Seahawks!
