October 2017

Message from Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli

Dear Seahawk Community,

In October, a campus-wide celebration marked UNCW’s 70th-anniversary year, while the university’s education and music programs received high marks from the websites Top Master’s in Education and Zippia, respectively.

During "Midway Giveaway," first-year students enjoyed ice cream, picked up some free gifts and, best of all, learned about the many resources available to help them achieve academic success. Our commitment to community engagement was at the forefront of a collaboration between UNCW and New Hanover County Schools to open the Future Teachers Career Academy at Isaac Bear Early College High School, and we look forward to building that partnership.

Inventor Oscar Lewis came to campus as the keynote speaker for Cape Fear Region Minority Enterprise Development Week and Noah Strote, an associate professor of history at North Carolina State University, gave the Department of History’s Sherman Lecture.

Members of the UNC Board of Governors (top) and UNC system President Margaret Spellings toured UNCW to learn about our signature programs and priorities in our Strategic Plan, and we welcomed the UNCW Board of Trustees for its quarterly meeting.

The FaceAge Experience” challenged participants to look beyond preconceived notions of aging, while “Brushstrokes,” a student film documenting a community’s transformation through art, was selected for the 23rd annual Cucalorus Film Festival. We are in the midst of Writers' Week, the Department of Creative Writing’s annual celebration of the written word, and Entrepreneurship Week, a student-centered event presented by the Cameron School of Business.

Fall sports are going strong, and the Seahawk men’s and women’s basketball teams, together with their new head coaches, C.B. McGrath and Karen Barefoot, kicked off the 2017-18 season with “Midnite Madness.”

May the Seahawk spirit remain strong through the rest of an eventful semester.

Go Seahawks!
