Frequently Asked Questions
- When and where will NCAS be held?
The NCAS event will be held at UNCW in the Burney Center on March 22-23, 2019. Please refer to the Directions and Parking page for driving directions, parking information, and a campus map.
- Who is eligible to present their work at NCAS?
Any high school, college/university, graduate or doctoral student currently enrolled at an institution of higher education in North Carolina, as well as post-docs and faculty members of North Carolina institutions may present at the NCAS conference.
- Can I present if I did my research/scholarship at an institution outside of North Carolina?
Yes. For example, if you spent the summer conducting research at a national laboratory or college/university outside of North Carolina, you can still present at NCAS.
- May a faculty member present his/her research at NCAS?
Yes.
- When is the deadline to submit an abstract for NCAS?
March 15.
- What length does my abstract need to be?
All abstracts should be submitted through the Abstract Submission link, and be no more than 300 words.
- What size should my poster be?
Posters should not be larger than 36” x 48”. Posters can be arranged either in landscape (horizontally) or portrait (vertically). Please see the Abstract Submission Guidelines page for further details.
- Does my project have to be completely finished for me to present?
No, although most work will be. You should at least be able to present what the overall question is, explain how you will answer the question, and any preliminary results you have.
- Is there a registration fee for students, faculty mentors or others attending the symposium?
Yes. Fee amounts are available on the NCAS 2019 Online Registration page when you register.
- How do I register for the conference?
Visit the NCAS 2019 Online Registration page to register.
Early registration is available through March 15. A late fee of $20 will be applied to registrations submitted March 16-22. Online registration will close at 3:00PM on Friday, March 22. After that, registration will be available ON SITE ONLY and is limited to individual registrations. The $20 late fee will apply. - What types of presentations will there be?
Poster
Students who present in this format will stand by their posters to answer questions as audience members walk through the poster session space. Posters will be attached to 48″ wide by 36″ long poster boards using thumbtacks, binder clips, or other mounting materials and placed on numbered easels.
Oral Presentation
Students who present in this format will present their research orally, using digital technology such as PowerPoint to facilitate the presentation. The oral presentation sessions will be concurrent.
- What type of presentation should I choose?
Students should speak to their mentors if they are unsure which presentation type will best highlight their work.
- I worked with a group on a research project; can a group make a presentation?
Yes, but a Primary Presenter must register and facilitate the presentation. The Abstract Submission link will ask the primary presenter to designate any co-presenters. The co-presenters DO NOT have to submit abstracts, but they should register themselves separately for the conference.
- If I need to stay the night in Wilmington, is there a preferred hotel?
