CSB SPD Tip of the Month!

tip of the month

Don't Underestimate the Importance of Professional Development!
What is professional development?  Simply put, it is exactly as it sounds. It is the development and mastery of professional skills in addition to your academic coursework. This can include experiential learning in the form of an internship (which is so very impactful to have on your resume and provides hands on learning opportunities), or it it may be training or certificate courses on industry specific tools and skills.

Having the appropriate skill set is necessary when applying for internships and jobs. As you read through job position descriptions, you will typically see a list of required or desired skills for that role. Candidates with experience or training are going to be far more likely to get the job! Do your own research to determine which skills you likely need to acquire by reviewing job descriptions specific to your field or positions of interest. Make a list of the skills and software proficiencies that show up most often, and then work toward learning these skills so that you can showcase your proficiency on your resume and on LinkedIn. Courses generally offer certificates or badges of some kind that you can list on a resume or include on your LinkedIn profile. These add value and make you a more attractive candidate for employment.

Look into the resources offered here at UNCW. Talk to your professors or make an appointment with the Office of Student Professional Development to learn about what may be available to you. Additionally, there are many wonderful online learning platforms available to learners with courses on thousands of subjects. Consider utilizing platforms such as LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, or edX. With a bit of research, you will find opportunities that will allow you to obtain the skills needed to stand out from the crowd.
