12th Annual Conference on Applied Learning in Higher Education (CALHE)
March 8-10, 2018
Conference Theme: Impact of Applied Learning

In partnership with Missouri Western State University, the 12th Annual Conference on Applied Learning in Higher Education (CALHE) will take place in Wilmington, NC on March 8-10, 2018 on the campus of University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW).

This year's conference theme will examine "The Impact of Applied Learning.” The theme should allow and encourage submissions that share the impact of applied learning activities in all of its forms and types. Submissions might address the results of an applied learning experience using qualitative or quantitative data, or submissions might address community impact or engagement. Submissions are encouraged addressing the conference theme but all applied learning submissions are welcome. Presenters may submit their work as an individual paper (that will be placed on a panel with others), poster, panel presentation (three or more speakers), roundtable, or as an applied learning demonstration.

Applied Learning focuses on learning that occurs in contexts outside of the traditional classroom setting, such as experiential learning, study abroad programs, independent research experiences, internships or practica, service-learning, client-based projects, or co-curricular programming. This year’s conference will provide a venue for scholars, practitioners, students and industry leaders to gather and share their work on the impact of applied learning.

Proposal Submission Types

Individual Submission

Proposals may be submitted by one person and considered for inclusion on the conference program. A committee will review proposals and place accepted individual presenters on a 3 or 4 person panel with others. We try to place individuals together based on the topic of their submission.

Poster Presentations

Poster presentations can be submitted for inclusion in the conference program. Posters should address the conference theme or some aspect of Applied Learning. Accepted poster presenters will need to bring their own poster to the conference. We will provide easels and/or poster board (along with clips/tacks) to help with display.

Roundtables

Roundtables typically focus on a specific topic and often contain an article/s, book, or a digital text from which the topic is drawn. Or, it may take the shape of a topic that the community has yet to address, but should be.

Panel Submissions

Panel proposals should include 3 or 4 people and include a chair of the panel, if possible. Panel Submissions should include a title for the panel as well as titles for individual presentations. Each presenter should prepare to deliver a 10-20 minute presentation that may take any variety of forms or delivered via any sort of media.

Applied Learning Demonstrations

Do you have a cool demonstration that you would like to share that has a focus on applied learning? Applied learning demonstrations should be a workshop or hands-on demonstration that includes handouts or digital resources to share with attendees.
