Dr. Jimmy T. Tate

Dr. Jimmy T. Tate: Board of Trustees Member: UNCW

Dr. Jimmy T. Tate, a native and resident of Southeastern North Carolina, was appointed by the NC Senate and Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger to the UNCW Board of Trustees in 2021. He currently serves as a member of the External Affairs and Educational Planning and Programs Committee. 

Tate is a longtime resident of Southeastern North Carolina except for his service in Northeastern North Carolina, where he was President of Roanoke-Chowan Community College.  He is a graduate of UNC Wilmington, where he earned a bachelor's degree and two master's degrees.  He holds a Doctorate in Education from St. Thomas University.  He has continued his higher education with Shaw University, Fayetteville State University and many other institutions.  Dr. Tate has served as a Community College President, Vice President of Human Resources and Institutional Advancement, and on the university levels as Chief of Staff and Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor of Institutional Advancement with two different universities.  In addition, he has served previously as a Trustee with Cape Fear Community College and Elizabeth City State University.  He serves on numerous boards throughout the region, including previous service on the Duke University Medical Center Advisory Board of the Graduate Medical Education Population Health Curriculum Development Project, Pender Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, Southeastern Economic Development Commission, and twice as Chairman of the Pender County Board of Commissioners while serving as a commissioner for nearly eight years.

He is a dedicated and long-time advocate of UNC Wilmington, having served as a student and a part-time faculty member of the University.  Currently, Dr. Tate is the President of Mt. Calvary Center for Leadership Development, which serves ten counties throughout Southeastern North Carolina.
