Student Engagement Benefits Everyone

PLS 434 Nonprofit Leadership Experience

This course teaches students about leadership and management in organizations. Class sessions are stimulating with many guest speakers form the nonprofit community; sessions with community leaders feature student networking and receptions. Students apply their learning in projects they complete for local nonprofit organizations during the summer. The skills students acquire in this class -- managing human resources, promoting and marketing, creating an organizational mission and vision, etc. -- are highly useful and transferable regardless of whether you decide to work in business, government, or a nonprofit. The course concludes with a Student Project Poster session attended by members of the nonprofit and University communities.

The Minor in Nonprofit Management and Leadership

The Minor in Nonprofit Management and Leadership (NML) equips students with the management and leadership skills critical to nonprofit organizations that will also help them to succeed in for-profit businesses and government agencies. The 3 required core courses (9 hours) present both conceptual learning and applied skills in decision-making, personnel management, fund development, budgeting and accounting, and marketing and public relations. Students may choose elective courses (9 hours) from among 13 participating UNCW programs. The minor allows you to develop and sharpen your job skills, learn about the nonprofit sector, and complete your major all at the same time!
