NEA Big Read: Cape Fear As part of the NEA Big Read: Cape Fear, UNCW’s Office of the Arts and Randall Library are hosting a collaborative, year-long effort to promote literacy in Wilmington and the broader Cape Fear region. Programming for the NEA Big Read: Cape Fear spans three counties and includes community book reads, discussions, family-friendly events, book clubs, teacher trainings, performances, story times, and art festivals that focus their efforts on Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing and other companion titles.  

NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. The NEA Big Read: Cape Fear is sponsored by the Arts Council of Wilmington & New Hanover County and the Brunswick Arts Council.

Based on actual events, Cape Fear Rising tells a story of one city's racial nightmare—a nightmare that was repeated throughout the South at the turn of the century. Although told as fiction, the core of this novel strikes at the heart of racial strife in America. This event is open to the public.

Join UNCW's Office of the Arts, the New Hanover County Public Library, and Tim Pinnick of the New Hanover County Community Remembrance Project for a program discussing the NEA Big Read book Homegoing by Yaa Gayasi, a brief introduction to library resources, and an in-depth look at African American genealogy. Light refreshments will be served from 5:00-5:30pm, and the program will run from 5:30-6:45pm.

When 17-year-old Lennon Lacy is found hanging from a swing set in rural North Carolina in 2014, his mother's search for justice and reconciliation begins while the trauma of more than a century of lynching African Americans bleeds into the present.

NEA Big Read Featured Title

Homecoming book cover Homegoing is an expansive novel about the legacy of chattel slavery by African-born writer Yaa Gyasi spanning eight generations. The novel begins with the parallel lives of two half-sisters from Ghana in the 18th century and follows their descendants through periods of history that include the American Civil War and Jazz Age Harlem.
