Opening Night Poetry Jam with Special Guests

Poets converge with music, dance, and film during this Opening Night Lumina Spotlight on different expressions of creativityHosted by "Bigg B" and Sandra “The Mid Day Miss" of Coast 97.3, this year's Poetry Jam will also feature choreographer Qaadir Hicks, violinist Christa Faison, and a short film from this year’s NC Black Film Festival. Art & Art History faculty member Gene Felice will be projecting interactive video art onto Kenan Auditorium. Enjoy some of the most talented artists in the coastal Carolinas during this celebration of the arts.

Footprints, produced by the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC, will present three modern dance classics by groundbreaking choreographers. Performed with impeccable technique and infectious energy by ADF dancers, Martha Graham’s Dark Meadow Suite, Merce Cunningham’s How to Pass, Kick, Fall and Run, and Paul Taylor’s Esplanade, are odes to movement in all its profound and varying forms. Lumina attendees will experience these pieces prior to their opening ADF performances in Durham. Heralded by the New York Times as “one of the nation’s most important institutions,” ADF was founded in 1934 to encourage and support established and emerging dance artists, preserve modern dance heritage through continued presentation of classic works, and enhance public understanding and appreciation of the dance art form.

This performance will be followed by a FREE Salsa Party in the UNCW Amphitheater in collaboration with Wilmington Latin Dance!

Defying the haze of mid-life, two friends seize an unlikely opportunity to reinvent their lives, quitting their jobs to restore an old bowling alley and serve the “world's greatest pizza" in Phoenix, Oregon. Starring James Le Gros, Lisa Edelstein, Jesse Borrego, Diedrich Bader, Kevin Corrigan, and directed by Gary Lundgren, Phoenix, Oregon takes a comedic look at the existential crisis many face when trying to find meaning and relevancy at mid-life. This film screening is presented by Cucalorus, a multi-disciplinary organization supporting emerging and innovative artists through an annual festival, a residency program, a technology conference, a community cinema, an outdoor film series, and an extensive regional education program.

Campfireball blends intimacy and absurdity in a live, improvisational variety show and story-based social media. This live stage event encourages collaboration as a fundamental form of creative expression. From abstraction to documentary, film and choreography come together in an experimental showcase of the region’s most talented artists.  A Cucalorus festival tradition, Dance-a-lorus Lab pushes boundaries by pairing filmmakers and choreographers for an exploration of film and dance to add to Campfireball’s ever-evolving experiment in collective experience and storytelling.
