Arts at UNCW

As it became apparent that the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns of March 2020 would linger, UNCW Office of the Arts, Cucalorus, StarNews, and WHQR Public Media came together to bring a drive-in movie experience to our community. The result was our Curbside Cinema series. Beginning on July 10th, 2020, and ending on April 30th, 2021, the series brought joy and a safe, socially distanced reprieve to over 4,500 patrons. The reach of the series was expansive. While neighboring county residents made regular appearances, some patrons commuted from as far away as Raleigh and Myrtle Beach, SC. There were many opportunities to learn and grow over the span of the series as organizers adjusted to challenges, and patrons rekindled the nostalgia of the past. For some, it was their first-ever experience of a drive-in movie. Each patron came to Curbside Cinema screenings for their own reasons. Our goal was to provide a safe space for each to get what they needed, whether that be a laugh, a cry, or an escape from pandemic-related isolation. Our hope is that our patrons will cherish the memories they created. What we saw as a community is that through the art of film, we all connected. A sincere thank you to all who made Curbside Cinema a success.
